English Title "The Ortolan Chamber"

2016
Writers, Directors & Producers
Anna Mitterer, Marcuse Hafner
Synopsis
‘La Chambre d’Ortolan’ is a film about the ceremonies and customs that constitute the mechanisms of representation and distinction of the elite. It depicts a last meal, designed as such by the old dignitary, in which he is served a small songbird, the ortolan, the eating of which is associated with various myths. The myths surrounding François Mitterrand’s last meal are the starting point for our reflections on the topic of power. We are mainly interested in examining the mechanisms of power and status in relation to their transitory nature and to time itself. The acting is minimalistic, without any dialogue. The claustrophobic situation of the room, THE ORTOLAN CHAMBER, is only dissolved after the ritual hast finished: only then is it possible fort he protagonists to leave.

Sola is the last survivor in Vienna – the city is hers. Without electricity or running water she lives a dreary routine. She strays around through abandoned homes – always in search of food and possible survivors. Yet there is no lack of necessities, but solitude drives her in an increasingly critical state. The only saving grace in their empty world is music. Every day she goes for one hour in a church to play the organ – even though she never had practice before. Synopsis
Rain on a window pane, a fire truck, a tomcat with innumerable offspring: it is an intentionally unintentional gaze that allows for chance encounters, for stories and memories – leads that Ruth Beckermann follows across Europe and the Mediterranean. Nigerian asylum seekers in Sicily, an Arab musician in Galilee, nationalists drunk on beer in Vienna, the Capitoline Wolf, and three veiled young women trying for minutes to cross a busy road in Alexandria. Threads, cloth and textiles pop up like book marks in a fabric of movement, of travelling or seeking refuge. "Those Who Go Those Who Stay" is a story of being on the move, in the world and one’s own life.
